Nolan Hosts Farmingdale College Students for HazMat Training at MacArthur
Ronkonkoma, NY (March 4, 2021) - In a move designed to support training for the next generation of aviation security professionals, Islip Town Supervisor Phil Nolan welcomed students from the Farmingdale College Aviation Security Management program for a day of specialized training in Hazardous Management given by the Town’s Hazardous Materials Response Team or “Haz-Mat” Team. The training included introduction to bio-hazard protective clothing (hazmat suits of various types), and equipment used to contain hazardous materials. Professor Joseph Clabby of Farmingdale’s Aviation program arranged the training in collaboration with Commissioner of Aviation Teresa Rizzuto.
The Haz Mat team is a unit of the airport’s Fire Rescue Division. The program, presented by Hazardous Materials Management Coordinator Michael Delgado and the Haz Mat Team, provided students with a chance to develop skills and background necessary to effectively manage and maintain specific systems vital to aviation security. Farmingdale University is the first university to boast an Aviation security program of this kind. According to Supervisor Nolan, “Our Haz Mat team is drawn entirely from town employees and offers an incredibly important service to the community. Moreover, this program will ensure that the students are learning practical, hands on, ‘real world’ knowledge that will provide them with the tools necessary for a successful career in aviation security.”
According to Commissioner Rizzuto, “The Town’s HazMat Team is ready to assist when called upon by the community beyond the boundaries of MacArthur Airport.” During 2010, the Haz Mat team assisted at the site of an oil tank accident in Central Islip and a chemical spill at the Northport VA Hospital, as well as numerous biohazard incidents involving animals. In 2008, the team mitigated a chlorine incident at the Kings Park landfill. The Training was held at the airport Fire Rescue facility located on airport grounds.
