5K Run

2010 Long Island MacArthur 5K Run/Walk for Veterans

More than 1,200 runners and walkers participated in the inaugural Long Island MacArthur Airport 5K Run/Walk for Veterans on June 5, the day before the anniversary of D-Day. Participants had the unique opportunity to race on a course unlike any other--Long Island MacArthur Airport's airfield. The day became even more meaningful when runners learned that one of the departing flights during the race was actually a special Honor Flight carrying World War II veterans to Baltimore for special ceremonies at the WWII Memorial in nearby Washington D.C. The race, which was organized by the New York State Fraternal Order of Police, Islip Lodge #862, on behalf of the Town of Islip, raised more than $40,000 for Long Island 9-1-1 Veterans, a local, non-profit organization that provides special services to Long Island veterans.

A great race course! Great cause! Great day to be an American!

About Long Island 9-1-1 Veterans

Long Island 9-1-1 Veterans is dedicated to assisting Long Island veterans who are experiencing short-term emergencies, often as they struggle to cope with the difficult challenges of re-entering civilian life after serving in combat areas.  Although this organization serves veterans of all eras, the most pressing need now is to support new veterans who recently served in Iraq or Afghanistan.  Especially during these tough economic times, returning veterans can find it difficult to find a job, or make ends meet for themselves and their families.  9-1-1 Veterans provides the financial assistance to help with food and clothing; rent and mortgage payments; utility payments; prescription drug and medical co-payments; car repairs and a variety of other short-term financial needs that can occur as veterans re-establish civilian lives.  Go to for more information.

About the Fraternal Order of Police

The Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) is the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers, with more than 325,000 members and over 2,000 lodges.  They are the voice of those who dedicate their lives to protect and serve our communities.  The FOP helps increase the safety of the communities they serve through education, legislation, information and community involvement.  Islip Lodge 862 of the FOP is committed to supporting our local Long Island veterans by partnering with the Town of Islip’s Department of Aviation to organize the first Long Island MacArthur 5K Run for Veterans.  Go to for more information.
